History
Comunidad Educativa Leon Felipe is the result of many dreams and many years of passionate work by entrepreneur and visionary Georgina, our founder and head of school. She began in 1973 with Casa de Ninos in her own home. She struggled to find an adequate location and moved from one rental place to another until 1977 when the school moved to a custom designed building in Echegaray. The elementary section of the school was begun in 1978 in another rented house until, in 1980, the entire school moved to its current location in Chiluca, Zona Esmeralda.
Georgina is the second of seven children. She found her passion at an early age through working with her own siblings, whom she helped educate. She became a teacher and began her career at a traditional school in Mexico, where she taught English as a second language. She then taught at grade school. She became aware of Montessori in the early 1970s and was fascinated with the philosophy. She was able to understand how better suited it was for children than the traditional methods of education and decided to dedicate her life to touching children with the wisdom of Maria Montessori.
Comunidad has always been a place of constant growth. Through the years many programs have been introduced and enhanced, including drama, violin lessons, music, foreign languages, chorus, and sports. Our facilities are always improving, growing in size and beauty. Our staff is also in constant growth and our teachers take several hours of training every year. Our teachers are also encouraged to pursue activities of self enhancement provided by the school such as yoga, reading groups and group dynamics (self-expression through the arts). Many of our teachers have been with Comunidad for many years. We celebrated the 25th anniversary of our 5th and 6th grade teacher, Norma, and our primary teacher, Mar, in Rome in 2006.
